This article discusses the semantic and pragmatic aspects of the Subjunctive I and Subjunctive II forms in the German language. It highlights a number of functions of the conjunctive, such as indirect speech, imaginary experiences, probability, strategies of speech politeness, and expressing objectivity. Theoretical views are substantiated by specific examples from German works of art. In turn, it is said that the conjunctive is not only one of the grammatical categories of the verb in the German language, but also a powerful semantic-pragmatic means of conveying meaning in the German language.
