RESISTANCE MOVEMENTS OF THE LOCAL POPULATION AGAINST THE RESETTLEMENT POLICY OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN THE SYRDARYA REGION (1890–1916)

This article analyzes the forms of local resistance against the Russian Empireʼs policy of resettling Russian peasants in the Syr Darya region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The study examines the empireʼs land and water reforms, the economic crisis of 1891–1892, and massive land confiscations during the Stolypin reform period as factors causing socio-political discontent among the local population. The evolution of resistance movements – from legal petitions and unauthorized land use to the 1892 Tashkent riot and the 1916 general uprising – is highlighted based on archival sources and modern historiography. The findings prove that the colonial policyʼs encroachment on the traditional lifestyle in the region inevitably led to armed conflicts.
